To understand a poem is to understand the poet—themes that spring from a way of life: A CIMA Arts Integration Project

Through this unit third grade scholars explored, expressed, practiced, and created poetry. We opened an exploration of poetry by reading Love That Dog by Sharon Creech—a story of a boy who grows to love poetry with the help of a dog named Sky. This poetic novel recognizes the connection between the poet’s life experience and their poetry. Each scholar selected a poem that “spoke” to them. These Power Point presentations include stanzas that act as mirrors into the poets life, illustrations of the meaning of the poem and an original poem about the poet by the scholar/researcher.
