“A Leaf Man Has to Go Where the Wind Blows”

This fall the K1 class welcomed educators from the Arnold Arboretum (Ana Maria and Nancy), who led a leaf observation study. The class then took a field trip to the Arnold Arboretum. Signs of autumn were in the air. There, we observed a variety of leaf specimens, and noted the many shapes and colors of leaves.

As a class, we read the book Leaf Man, by Lois Ehlert. The illustrations inspired scholars to create original leaf people art, by cutting and pasting scanned images of real leaves collected by students. During our study of fall leaves, we noted the variety of colors, shapes, and sizes of leaves, and applied these attributes in sorting and matching activities.
